You can recognize the larva of the barnacle by the two little 'horns'.

The nauplius and successive stages of R. kinnekullensis (so being directly comparable to the here described material) have a mandible with well-developed endopod and exopod. In further development the distal basipod and rami become progressively smaller, which can at last be followed up by the reduction in size of the insertion area of the

Nauplii (stages 2 and 6) were generally characterized by lower swimming speeds (nauplii: 0.98 to 2.54 mm s -1; cyprids: 2.56 to 3.19 mm s -1 ), higher persistence times (nauplii: 1.18 to 5.49 s; cyprids: 0.29 to 0.92 s), and higher persistence lengths (nauplii: 1.52 to 11.12 mm; cyprids: 0.96 to 2.80 mm). nique to nauplius larvae of economically important crustacean, such as Japanese prawns or crabs.

The nauplius stages of many barnacle species have been described at the light microscope level (Bassindale, 1936; Knight-Jones & Waugh, 1949; Costlow & Bookhout, 1957; Karande, 1974), including those of the British barnacles Balanus balanoides (L.) and Balanus hameri (Ascanius) (Crisp, 1962a, b). Chinochthamalus scutelliformis is a small barnacle, 3–5 mm across, exhibiting four shelly tubular columns, two in the carina and one in each lateral plate of the shell. The species has been recorded on the coast of northern areas of the South China Sea ( Ren, 1984 ), and inhabits gregariously at rocky reefs in crevices and under-boulders on the middle part of shores. Nauplius is a homologous developmental stage shared by all crustaceans, and the free-living form of nauplius has persisted in most lineages (Williams 1994b) but see Scholtz (2000).
